Leisure Committee

The Leisure Committee on the Town Council is responsible for play areas, children's play equipment, the tennis courts at Springfield and the allotments. The allotments are at present over subscribed with a waiting list of around 50 people. Because of the interest shown, we have been looking at ways to increase the amount of plots to cover the demand, one idea being to split some of the larger plots because of the difficulty in restarting them after being out of use.

We also have plans for Springfield, such as a new path surrounding the park which will double up as a jogging surface with measured distances.

As for the skate facility, we still have full support for this facility and money is being raised by the youngsters to keep this running. The BMX track continues to be well used especially through the summer months.

The play equipment is being renewed as part of a rolling programme and the aim is to replace the woodchip under the equipment with a rubber safety surface.

We try to come up with new ideas all the time to promote the use of our area.

Recreation Grounds and Open Spaces

Christmas Lights

The Christmas Lights Working Group currently involves four Councillors supported by two Council staff. The group organises the erection and removal of the decorations as well as the switch on event. Competitions include a quiz, best dressed window, and design a Christmas Card. The winner of the Christmas Card competition is then asked to officially switch on the Christmas Lights at 6pm on the first Friday in December. Other highlights of the event include entertainment outside the Town Hall and also a Bazaar where local groups can raise money for their charity.

The Summer Fete

The Summer Fete Working Group organised the Fete held at Springfield Recreation Ground on Saturday 19 July 2008. The event included small fair rides, workshops, stalls and entertainment. Further details will be available as the Fete grows nearer.

Tree Planting Grants and Carbon Offset Scheme

Corsham Town Council invites applications from local groups, businesses and organisations for grants towards planting trees.

Applications should demonstrate a clear plan for planting native or indigenous trees that enhance the quality of life by improving the environment and promoting Corsham in a positive way.

Trees must be planted in Corsham Parish and in public view. This might be gardens, fields, road verges or open public spaces but only where there is agreement in place for future maintenance. The applicant must agree to carry out the planting and look after the trees in the future. Funding will be up to 100% of the cost but grants will not be made to individuals. Grant funded trees must not be used to fulfill landscape conditions imposed as part of a planning condition and grants will not be made retrospectively.

Advice on the types of trees that can be planted and how to do it are available in the Town Hall or below.

Councillor Allan Bosley said  The Town Council has allocated £1000 towards planting native trees locally. This will help ensure that Corsham remains an attractive place to live.”

In conjunction with this and Climate Change Corsham the Council has set up a Corsham Carbon Offset Scheme.

People are invited to contribute to the fund when they travel by aeroplane. A guide as to what they might like to donate is available at the Town Hall or below.

Councillor Nick Keyworth said What we want to do is raise awareness of local people and visitors to Corsham and enable them to contribute towards the visual and environmental qualities of the town and surrounding area.” He added  This scheme is not intended to be an exact science but more a gesture which will enable local people to engage with carbon offsetting in a simple and affordable way and which will enable a direct and visible benefit through the planting of more trees within their own community.”
