Where did your business begin?
I was travelling before I had kids and came back to Corsham to look for work. Another lad, Aaron, from school had a part-time job at the greengrocers so I joined him and was there for six years. Then one day the boss decided to give up the shop and he asked if anyone wanted to grab the chance. Aaron wasn’t interested so I took it on. You know I’d never cashed up, never organised an order. But the other shopkeepers in the town helped me learn the ropes. That was about seven years ago.
So just before the Covid pandemic. How did that hit you?
We were doing okay, but when Covid hit we were busier than ever. People who usually shopped at supermarkets were coming into town. My grandfather – everyone calls him Gramps – had to put his taxi business on hold and so was doing deliveries for me, and he’s just carried on helping. Aaron is still with me. He’s been working here for over 20 years now.
People come in because they like to chat. You can tell. I think they feel seen. I hope they feel welcome. We became more aware of that in Covid. There were so many people isolated by not being able to speak to anyone. When they were getting deliveries from us or one of the other shops, we might be the only people they were speaking to that day when they made the order. And, the only ones they might see when we dropped it off. I don't think any of us take that community for granted now.
There’s an expectation that people in business should grow and open more shops. But this shop is so unique – its connection to the town is so special. I am not sure opening somewhere else would feel like success to me. My shop gives me a sense of belonging. It's family, friends, my home. And it's growing in its own way – there's so much potential as people think more about what they eat and seek out local, fresh produce. They are the goods I supply.
The character of the place, its history, adds a lot. Did you know Julian (You can meet local historian Julian in our voices section of this site!) has just posted two photos on Facebook from the Royal Arthur navy base and my great grandad was in it, doing his training back in 1951! Gramps couldn't believe it when he saw his father. His favourite bit of history, and mine now, is around Box Tunnel. It was designed by Brunel and considered the most difficult single engineering work on the London to Bristol route because of its steep gradient. It's now one of Brunel’s most celebrated structures and legend has it that on his birthday the sun shines right through.
Not far from Mitch’s greengrocer you’ll find the building where a greengrocer from decades set up shop, at number 40 – 42 High Street. It was the business of a Herbert Spackman (his family pictured on the high street below) who went to the local prep school (Miss Ann Hulbert’s Preparatory School which is now the Pound Arts Centre) and then to Mr Hull’s Boarding School, Pickwick Road’s Mansion House (now the business hub Digital Mansion).
The Spackman family lived in the High Street where their large grocery and drapery business grew. Herbert‘s love of photography has left a legacy of beautiful black and white images of the life in Corsham during the early 1900s. He died in 1949 aged 84 and was buried along with his beloved wife Daisy at the top of Ladbrook Cemetery alongside the hedgerow.
