Corsham Youth Council began in October 2008.

It is made up of representatives from Corsham’s six primary schools along with students from Years 7-12 at The Corsham School.

Two Town Councillors also sit in on the meetings to offer advice, along with the Town Council’s Community and Information Officer who is the administrator for the Youth Council. Other than that, adult intervention is kept to a minimum, although guest speakers are often invited along to meetings.

The group’s monthly meetings, during term-time, are held in the Council Chamber at the Town Hall. The Youth Councillors vote for their own Chairman, who holds the position for six months to enable as many people as possible to experience the role.

If you are interested in becoming a Youth Councillor you must either live or go to school in the parish, and be aged 10-18.

For more information, email Sharon Thomas, Head of Community Services. If you’d like to see copies of past Minutes, CYC Surveys, etc, these are also available.

Youth Councillors are asked for their opinions

The Youth Councillors take their responsibilities very seriously and have been asked by the Town Council for their opinions on such matters as cycle path routes, the choice of new playground equipment for the town’s play areas, and how to improve facilities for young people generally in Corsham. Here’s what they have achieved in recent years:

In 2011/12, the Youth Council ran a survey of young people in the town and their thoughts on leisure facilities and, in particular, the play areas in Corsham. The results continue to be a huge help to the Town Council in their plans for the parks and recreation sites.

In 2013, the fifth anniversary of the Youth Council, the Youth Councillors continued with the projects they had started, proving that young people here in Corsham really care about their Town and what happens here.

In 2014, the Youth Council has run another survey of young people and started work on creating a time capsule to be buried at Springfield Rec on completion of the new Campus and play area.

In 2015, the Youth Council, along with other groups, gave the Town Council a lot of feedback on the proposed designs for the new play area at Springfield Rec and played a big part in the official opening of the play area on 13 July. The time capsule they put together was also buried on that date, to lay undisturbed for 50 years!

In 2016, the Youth Council worked on a survey that looked at sports facilities for young people in Corsham, as well as giving their feedback on a parkour area at Springfield Red and helping with the Keep Corsham Tidy campaign. They also worked with Corsham TV on a film about the work they do.
