  • Wiltshire Council is promoting the Target 2030 project which is a business energy efficiency project that aims to support small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in Gloucestershire, Swindon and Wiltshire to improve  their energy consumption and operate more sustainably. Case Studies – Target 2030: Low Carbon Business Support Services 
  • Wiltshire Council worked with John of Gaunt School in Trowbridge to bring climate science education and green jobs to life for the next generation through a project called “Embedding Careers into the Maths Curriculum”.
  • A draft Green Skills Action plan for Wiltshire and Swindon is being developed and aims to ensure demand for upskilling existing employees in sustainable practices is supported by suitable opportunities. 
  • A sustainable businesses initiative was set up by Corsham Town Council in 2021. A survey was sent out to businesses in Corsham to assess how sustainably they are operating. From this information further projects can be developed to work with local businesses and improve their sustainability and reduce their carbon emissions. 
  • Corsham Town Council’s Environmental Policy ensures that any materials and services used by the Council are sourced from local and sustainable suppliers where possible. 

Green jobs

  • Green jobs are going to play a vital role in rebuilding the economy post-pandemic. A green job focuses on either reducing carbon emissions, restoring nature or making similar environmental improvements. Find out more about green jobs here: What’s a green job | Friends of the Earth 
  • The UK government has recognised the shift that is needed towards a green economy to ensure a sustainably growing economy that is resilient to the changes of the future.   • The West of England Combined Authority has also recognised the need to green our economy and that in order to meet net zero by 2030 net zero we will need to see fundamental shifts across all areas of the economy including transport, power, industry and the natural environment. Analysis by Ecuity found that for the region to meet net zero by 2030, more than 50,000 new jobs would be required.
